Many new pet owners are unaware that dogs also have a heat cycle. The heat cycle is a complex physiological and behavioral change requiring extra care and management. Understanding the signs and taking preventive measures ensures your dog’s health and happiness. Here’s an overview of the dog’s heat cycle and how to handle it:
Overview of estrus
Estrus in dogs, also known as the reproductive cycle, usually occurs every six months. This cycle varies by breed and individual. There are three stages of estrus: pre-estrus, estrus, and post-estrus.
01 Pre-estrus
Duration: 7-10 days.
Signs: Ovary starts releasing eggs, with possible bleeding. Dogs may become more clingy, seeking extra attention and affection.
02 Estrus
Duration: 7-10 days.
Signs: Peak of reproductive cycle with high hormone levels, increased excitement and anxiety, and attraction to male dogs.
03 Post-estrus
Duration: 7-10 days.
Signs: Hormone levels drop, behavior and mood stabilize.
Management
Hygiene Care:Use wet wipes to keep your dog clean and comfortable.
Frequent Urination: Ensure plenty of water to help maintain hydration.
Appetite Changes:Some dogs may eat more or less; this is normal.
Increased Attention:Spend more time interacting with your dog to alleviate anxiety.
